I’ve been trying to find a lot of military blogs lately trying to figure out what I thought was good and interesting. I’ve spent some time trying to make this site nice on the eyes and interesting at the same time. I clearly have my own style of writing that I’d like to refine beyond “Stone Sarcasm.” I’m finding there aren’t very many good military blogs out there. In fact, most of them are trash. Many got into politics this past election, others only post funny news stories and videos, and the rest came back from deployment and don’t really know what to do with their blog now.
I have found a couple of quality sites:
The War on Big Tobacco — This is an E-6 (Staff Sergeant) in the National Guard who is currently in Iraq. His writing is funny, crude and quality. His article on Queen for a Day applied to my active duty time, I have no reason to doubt it while being deployed. If you choose to read Queen for a Day, keep in mind that men are pigs and life isn’t always fair.
Michael Yon Online Magazine — Michael Yon does his own reporting paying for his travels by selling photos and his own book. He writes a column for the NY Post, but for the most part shuns most regular media so he can mantain complete editorial control. One of his most recent posts gives you an idea of what Baghdad is like. This will be good news for the family.
Kaboom: A Soldier’s War Journal — This is the most well written military blog I have read. His description of the bureaucratic silliness of the military is fantastic. This post demonstrates the love for his soldiers. Here he talks about their unofficial mascot (General Order #1 forbids “mascots”) He was ordered to take it down back in June. He should have a book deal sometime next year.
Sorority Soldier — Last but not least. You can read about my unit’s deployment from the perspective of a “girly-girl.” She provides the exact opposite perspective that you’ll find from the Big Tobacco link I posted earlier. She’s also a good friend that I’ve shamed into writing over thanksgiving
